The ancient Reghion, destroyed several times by devastating earthquakes (1783 and 1908), was rebuilt around to its historic centre, extending mainly along the coast. The splendid Lungomare Italo Falcomatà, described as "the most beautiful kilometer of Italy" offers a beautiful landscape on the Strait of Messina. The Via Marina reports also for the many species of plants, partly tropical characteristics for their size and shape. Among these trees are the remains of walls of Greek and Roman baths. To note the beautiful palaces Liberty Avenue Vittorio Emanuele.

The National Museum of Magna Grecia, one of the most important in Italy, offers a rich documentation of Greek colonization in Calabria. The exhibition is structured on four levels: the ground floor are the salt of prehistory and Locri; the first floor rooms Rhegion, Matauros, Medma, Kaulon, Krimissa and Section numismatics. On the second floor is a valuable art gallery. In the basement is the section of underwater archaeology, where are exposed famous Riace Bronzes, masterpieces dating from the fifth century BC, and the head of the philosopher. Along the Corso Garibaldi, the main city artery on which overlook shops and businesses are Cilea Theatre, Villa Comunale and the Duomo. Riedificato in 1928, after the earthquake of 1908, the Dome is characterized, in the facade, for the presence of four turrets topped by domes pierced. At the top of the steps are statues depicting S. Paul and St. Stefano of Nicaea, the work of F. Jerace. The portals of entry are in bronze. Inside include the Chapel of Sacramento, Baroque, the pulpit and torso monumental column that according to tradition would be the prodigy of St. Paul.

In the historical center, overlooking the Piazza del Castello Aragonese, is the beautiful Church of Ottimati which has strong similarities with the Byzantine temples. Riedificato in the'30s, the temple has three naves, Arab-style Norman. The floor mosaic comes partly from the basilica of Terreti Norman, was destroyed. The altarpiece, depicting the Annunciation, is the work of Ciampelli. See also the Catholic church of the Greeks and the Small Museum of St. Paul.

COSTA VIOLA

The game of colors that create mountains with the underlying water has meant that the coastline from Santa Trada continues north to Scilla, Bagnara and Palmi were identified as Costa Viola. The Tyrrhenian coast is the most obvious symbol of this picturesque morphological characteristics. Here decline towards the sea dell'Aspromonte buttresses the Tyrrhenian, the landscape therefore takes the original features that allow you to move within a radius of a few kilometres from the coast, with its famous beaches, high mountains. Sicily is really very close, just 3 km of sea. A sea in which for centuries has been handed the tradition of fishing for swordfish, whose modern techniques, while displacing those primitive, retain the charm of ancient rituals.

SCILLA ... THE RISE OF MYTH

Scilla, a mythical place that recalls the legend of Scylla and Charybdis sung by Homer nell'Odissea, is one of the most famous tourist centres of Calabria. Perched on a granite cliff that out into the sea Scilla Castle, overlooking the Bay of Marina Grande, the main beach overlooked by many local and valuable church of the Holy Spirit. Built between the ages VIII and IX, the Castle housed the monastery and the church of the Basilian Fathers. Conquistato by the Normans around 1060, then passed under the control of Swabians, Angevins and the Aragonese. In 1533 it became property of Ruffo, who bought the fief of Scilla kept until 1806. Charming is the district of Chianalea, with the houses of fishermen who seem to float on the sea, with its picturesque boats moored and networks.
